Basalt
In February 2020, Basalt began as an experimental farmers market venture before evolving into Eastown's go-to Tex-Mex brunch destination. Led by Steven Martinez, a proud queer Latino, Basalt is more than just a restaurant—it’s a space that fosters community through the universal language of food. However, as the restaurant’s popularity grew, its original branding no longer reflected the depth of its vibrant, culturally rich personality. As the sole brand designer and illustrator for this project, I was tasked with reimagining Basalt’s visual identity. My role was to craft a brand system that was both fun and memorable, while staying true to Steven’s vision of blending Midwest and Texan influences. To ensure flexibility and accessibility, I developed brand assets that could be refined and updated easily in Canva, empowering the owner to manage elements like the menu with ease. A key part of this project was integrating the rainbow as a recurring visual motif, a meaningful reflection of Steven’s queer identity and his vision for creating an inclusive community. From envisioning how the rainbow could weave through various brand elements to creating Basalt’s new logo—a whimsical, taco-loving chipmunk named Copernicus—I aimed to bring warmth, playfulness, and pride to every aspect of the brand. This case study showcases how Basalt’s new identity not only captured its unique personality but also celebrated its roots and commitment to community.
